We recommend that a data strategy be considered for each project. This strategy guides how data will be managed throughout the project, keeping it organized, secure, and efficiently utilized.
Things to consider at the start of a project
At the start of a project, team leads should clearly describe the purpose and key details of the data, as well as storage requirements and defined roles in the curation process. This allows CanWIN to create an appropriate storage structure for the incoming data, with the necessary access permissions.
Steps we recommend:
- See our Project data planning primer - team leads, for a summary of the key things to consider at the start of your project.
- Complete the data planning form, also linked at the bottom of the primer, which collects this key information for CanWIN.
Things to consider after data collection
Most of the curation process after data collection will be an iterative process between the CanWIN curators and the data producer or technician appointed by the team lead. This includes the organization, processing/cleaning, and sharing of data and metadata.
Steps we recommend:
- See the Project data planning primer - data producers for a summary of the key questions to keep in mind after the data collection stage.
- Keep a record of the answers to these questions, if needed. We recommend keeping this information in your data repository.
If you can consider these questions before submitting your data, the remainder of the data submission workflow will be familiar and require less time and effort.
