After submitting the data and metadata to CanWIN, we may contact you to fill in any gaps in the metadata, or to recommend that your files follow certain best practices. Here are the key areas that typically require collaboration between our CanWIN curators and data producers after data submission:
- Assisting data producers with structuring and formatting data files so they can be seamlessly ingested into our database. CanWIN provides a cleaning tool to perform basic tasks such as merging multiple files, deleting, adding, and renaming columns in multiple files, etc.
- Requesting additional metadata or supplemental resources (for example, images to showcase the dataset/project, related papers, etc.)
- Creating a data dictionary for variables.
- Creating cookbooks and codebooks that describe the processing of the data.
- Standardizing the variable names to create unambiguous, interoperable data.
- Determining which pages require DOIs.
We ask for your cooperation during this stage as we work to publish the best version of your data. After publishing, links to the created pages will be sent for your review.
Publishing data products
Data products are additional resources that supplement the data and research, making it easier to understand through visualizations, interactivity, and lay summaries. Some examples of these products are:
✅ Interactive data dashboards | ✅ Interactive applications |
✅ Data stories | ✅ Infographics |
✅ Interactive maps | ✅ Research summaries |
✅ Graphic novels | ✅ Images |
These products drive engagement with the data and research, and deliver scientific findings simply for non-scientists, or scientists who may not be in the same research field.
