Choosing a License

CanWIN offers a selection of licenses when uploading datasets or publications to the Data Catalogue. Each license places different restrictions on utilization of the content they download. See the table below for more information on the licenses CanWIN. Additionally, if you would like to request a DOI, but your publication or data cannot be released until a specific date, you can utilize our embargo option to specify when your metadata can be shared.

Name Code Description
Creative Commons Attribution- 4.0 International CC BY 4.0 CanWIN Default. This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered. Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.
Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International CC BY-SA 4.0

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to “copyleft” free and open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use. This is the license used by Wikipedia, and is recommended for materials that would benefit from incorporating content from Wikipedia and similarly licensed projects.

Creative Commons Attribution- No-Derivatives 4.0 International CC BY-ND 4.0

This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.

Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only allowing others to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

Terms of Access and Use

CanWIN's Terms of Access (TOA) can provide users with additional acknowledgements, credits, and constraints on the use of their data. Adding to the TOA, highlighted by the blue boxes in the image below, allows for further governance of how your data is used. This provides additional assurance, especially when dealing with secondary use of sensitive data.

The Terms of Use (TOU) outline how users should access and use the content downloaded from the CanWIN site.

TOA/TOU statements reiterate that users must follow the uses outlined by the license applied to the data, and provides best practices for citing the materials. When you upload data to the site, you may also provide your own terms of use, provided they do not conflict with the license they are sharing the data under.

CanWIN provides default TOA and TOU statements, highlighted by the yellow and green boxes in the image below.
