The Land to Ocean Aquatic Continuum of Carbon research project (LOAC) program addresses two key challenges around carbon in freshwater-marine systems.

  1. More than half of all carbon taken in by land is exported to freshwater systems, BUT two-thirds of this carbon (globally) is lost to the atmosphere, buried or delivered to the coastal ocean.

  2. Increased carbon in the oceans is causing Ocean acidification, which has poorly understood impacts on ecosystem health.

The LOAC project aims to:

  • Reduce uncertainty on key carbon cycle processes from source to sea.

  • Assess the impacts of water development projects on carbon cycling

  • Quantify downstream impacts of river inflow on coastal ocean greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets and ecosystem health.

The LOAC project addresses SDG's 6, 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
