This system measures sea ice thickness without the ice observer having to exit the helicopter. The system operates by using low-frequency electromagnetic waves which pass through sea ice and reflect from the ice-sea boundary. The strength of the reflections are then compared to the distance from the sensor to the top of the snow/ice.
